Cemetery Extension & Memorial Wall

Calne Town Council had the foresight to recognize that land to be used for burials was becoming scarce, and allocated a portion of land to the rear of the cemetery to be used as an extension.

The extension was opened in 2004, and incorporated into the design were a set of gates and some railings that had previously graced the Harris Bacon Factory, once the main employer of Calne people.

The extension has been designated a lawn cemetery, which means that graves may be marked by a headstone only, and planting on the grave space is not permitted.

Memorial Wall

A feature of the cemetery extension is a Memorial Wall. This wall can accommodate bronze plaques similar to those used in the Garden of Remembrance.

These plaques, as well as memoralising those buried in the cemetery, can also remember people who are buried away from Calne.

The Memorial Wall provides a focal point for family and friends to visit on special days and leave flowers.

In addition to the Memorial Wall, Calne Town Council are happy to discuss the donation of benches or the planting of shrubs, trees or flower bulbs as memorials.
