Why is the project needed?

The need for this project was first identified in a survey by North Wiltshire District Council.  The survey, conducted in 1998, highlighted a shortfall of 26 acres of recreational space according to the National Playing Fields Association criteria.   Since that time the town’s population has grown by approximately 12% and the need for additional recreation space has grown accordingly.

The need for a facility like Beversbrook has been highlighted through consultation with the local community both through the community planning process and direct with local football, cricket and rugby clubs.  The scheme is recognised in the Calne Area Community Plan and in the Town Council’s Policy Plan.

In 2003, the Calne Community Area Partnership undertook the Big Baton Challenge, where a sports baton was passed among over 4,000 people in the town and villages to raise awareness of the lack of sports facilities in the area.

The provision of this multi-sports facility is seen as part of the continuing regeneration of Calne following the demise of the Harris factory in the 1980’s.  Current sports provision in Calne is very fragmented and too small to allow people in Calne, particularly young people, to play team sports in Calne for their town.

In an age where healthy living issues are concerning professionals everywhere, a sports project which helps to create the capacity for increased sport and exercise opportunities for all ages must be a priority.  We owe it to our next generation to give them the facilities and opportunities to take part in and excel in sport.

The Beversbrook Sports Project is desperately needed by the people of Calne.  In particular young people should be able to play team sports for their town so as to engender civic pride in their home town.  This facility will provide a ‘home’ for their team sports as well as providing young people with opportunities for an active, healthy lifestyle leading to an active, healthy adulthood.
