The Town Mayor's Chain

The Town Mayor's chain of office is worn to signify their status and worn at functions where the Town Mayor officially represents the Council

The Mayor's chain and badge were obtained at a cost of £43.00, the money being raised by public subscription.

They were first used on 9 November 1882.  They are of silver gilt hallmarked and anchor (Birmingham), date letter 1881 and makers mark T and JB.

The badge is oval in shape, with central field of black enamel, on which is a tower in relief of silver gilt and three feathers in plain silver, these forming the borough arms. The whole is bordered by a scroll of work of oak and olive leaves and the hook at the top is formed by the head and wings of a cherub.

The chains is composed of 56 links, 15 of them being of the kind known among silversmiths as Gothic and the remaining 41 of the more usual cable pattern. On the Gothic links are medallions bearing the initials of former Mayors – those of the first Mayor being in coloured enamels on the centre link which is flanked by two miniature maces.

The Mayoress Chain

The Mayoress' Chain was presented by Edith S Pound Mayoress on the occasion of the Coronation of King George V and is dated 1911.

The chain is worn by the Mayoress (or Mayors Consort) at functions where he or she is attending with the Mayor.

The Deputy Mayor's Chain

The Deputy Mayor's Chain was donated in 2004 by the Town Mayor at the time, Cllr Mrs Carol O'Gorman. The chain cost £630 and is of gold plated gilding metal. The links are of a 3 scroll design and each year the incumbent Deputy Town Mayor's name is inscribed on a link.

The pendant is contains an enamel oval in the centre depicting the Town Council crest. The pendant was presented to Calne Town Council by T W Robinson in May 1986. The inscription on the rear of the pendant reads:

Presented by T W Robinson on the completion of the demolition of the Harris Factory, Calne May 1986.
