Robes & Costumes
There are a number of different robes and costumes that are worn by various individuals within the council at civic ceremonies. The costumes help to reinforce links with the town's history and add the required amount of British "pomp & ceremony" to civic events that is so appreciated.
Councillor Robes
Town Councillors are each allocated robes to be worn on civic occassions such as Mayor Making and Remembrance Day. These robes are blue in colour. Some of these robes are edged in fur. The fur edged robes were once warn by the Aldermen of the Borough. Aldermen no longer exist and it is custom for the fur edged robes to be warn by the Deputy Town Mayor and past Town Mayors.
Each Councillor is also given a hat to wear. The gentlemen have a bicorn hat which is warn outdoors only. Lady councillors wear a tricorn hat throughout the occasion.

The Town Mayors Robes
The Town Mayor's robes are much more elaborate compared to normal council robes, signifying their status within the council. The robes are crimson red with fur edging. The Mayor wears a tricorn hat and an eloborate jabot.
The Town Clerks Robes
The Town Clerk is the "proper officer" of the council and has an official outfit to wear at civic functions. The outfit represents the clerk's legal role and are reminiscent of a lawyers robing. The outfit includes a black robe, jabot, white gloves and a wig.
It is custom that the clerk wears this outfit whenever the Town Mayor is robed.

The Mace Bearer's Costume
The Mace Bearer wears a lightweight black gown edged with velvet, similar to a legal clerks gown. A tricorn hat is also worn.
The Town Crier's Costume
The Town Crier wears one of the most elaborate costumes belonging to the council. The outfit includes a green box coat, ornate waistcoat, knickerbockers, stockings, a jabot and tricorn hat.
