By law doctors must notify the Council of any cases of notifiable communicable diseases.

The Council may contact the patient to find out the background to the case and to establish the source of the infection. This may involve an interview with the patient concerned and giving advice on preventing further spread of the disease. The Council also monitors trends in numbers of reported notifiable communicable diseases.

The Council will notify the local Primary Care Trust's Health Protection Team who provide the skills to deal with the medical aspects of any outbreak of such disease
