Starting a new business is a potentially risky and difficult process.

There are a number of organisations that can help you.
  • The Enterprise Agency (External Link) provides free help and guidance for new business start-ups. Agency Advisers are qualified members of the Institute of Business Advisers.

  • Business Link (External Link) can help you with all manner of business-related queries.
  • The New Deal (External Link) is a government initiative that offers help for people who want to set up and run their own business. Help with a business plan and a test trading period is available as well as a “jobfinders grant”.
The Council provides details of current Business Opportunities.

Property

New buildings and adaptations to existing buildings may require planning permission.

Finance

The Inland Revenue Website (External Link) contains information for people starting up their own business.

If you are newly self-employed, you can ring their helpline on 0845 9154 515 between 8am - 8pm.

The council offers Business Grants on a discretionary basis.

As a business, you will be required to pay Business Rates

Staff Recruitment & Training

Your local job centre (External Link) will advise you on recruiting staff and will advertise positions in the local centres free of charge.

You can contact local employment agencies and advertise in the local press.

Training

Wiltshire College (External Link) provides a range of courses across its campuses.

Learndirect runs a number of courses including finance, marketing, personnel and health in its centres throughout the region.
