North Wiltshire District Council worked in partnership with Wiltshire County Council and North Wiltshire’s Young People’s Council to host an event for hard to reach groups of young people as part of Local Democracy week 2005. The event involved over 50 hard to reach young people including, young people not in employment, education or training, young carers and young farmers.

A flexible approach was taken to allow for the diversity of the young people that came along to the day.  Workshops examined key issues for attendees through a variety of mediums including art, drama and the outdoors.  Young people were asked to choose the most important issue to them and had a choice of workshops through which to explore their issue.  The key themes from the day revolved around leisure facilities, education, the environment and perceptions of young people.

Young people had a chance to interact with decision-makers through a political speed dating session after their workshops. The speed dating panel consisted of the Cabinet Member for Community and Staffing, John Thompson, the Mayor of Chippenham, John Scragg, UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) Member for North and West Wiltshire, Becky Holloway, the former Chief Executive of North Wiltshire District Council, Bob Marshall and the Leader of North Wiltshire District Council, Carol O’Gorman.

Becky Holloway from North Wilts Young People’s Council (and UKYP) said about the day, "Building on past experiences, the conference was a great example of how young people and adults can work together successfully. There was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day and I thought the politician carousel worked particularly well.

A DVD from the day is available on request.  Please contact the Youth Involvement Development Officer on 01249 706496 or by email at ypc@northwilts.gov.uk for a copy or any other information.
