Youth Conference - 20th October 2004
The Youth Conference was hosted as part of local democracy week by North Wiltshire District Council in partnership with Wiltshire County Council. We had around 90 young people attend the event from 7 of the 8 secondary schools and Wiltshire College from the district. It was a jam-packed day with young people benefiting from a range of workshops and opportunities. Wiltshire County Council hosted a group workshop as part of the day encouraging young people to feed back about the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth draft agenda for action. A creative influence ran throughout the day, including an ‘I’m bored graffiti board’, a drama-based group warm up session and a visual arts workshop. The day was closed by a spoken word artist who left us with this humorous and touching portrayal of the event
Beyonders PoemThis event was an exciting and unique day for many reasons. It was centred around a series of topic based workshops, the topics were selected from previous Young People’s Council meetings and a special consultation exercise run by young people as a part of the North Wiltshire Festival in July. Young people led each workshop with support from Officers of both the District and the County Councils.
The workshops organised and led by Young People at the conference included:
- Exploring leisure opportunities and facilities,
- Exploring Arts opportunities and facilities,
- Examining and developing the skills required for advocacy and effecting change,
- The future of the Young People's Council.
James Williams (a young person who facilitated a workshop) said:
‘I
enjoyed the whole day. I believe that the relationships between the young people and the facilitators were very relaxed. I think it helped having a young person leading alongside the expert’.For more information about the Youth Conference please click on the link below for a record of the day.
