Have you found a stray dog?

From the 6th April 2008 Local Authorities will be responsible for dealing with stray dogs at all times under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. The police will no longer have a duty for stray dogs.

If you have found a dog, please contact (01249) 706111 during office hours*. Out of office hours and up to 22:00 hrs please ring 0845 0568035 and your call will be dealt with by our Out of Hours Service.

*(Note: office hours Mon to Thurs 08:45 am – 17:15 pm, Fri 08:45 – 16:45 pm)

What to do if you lose your dog

Before your contact any of the telephone numbers listed below have you:-
  • Checked that your dog is not shut in a shed or room of the house for instance.
  • Has a member of your family taken the dog out?
  • Have you left the dog somewhere else?
  • Has a neighbour taken your dog in?
If after carrying out all the above checks you have still not found your dog, please telephone 01249 706111
during office hours* and we can advise if we have found your dog.

When phoning, please have the following information available.
  • Type of dog lost
  • Age and sex of dog
  • Description of dog and any distinguishing features
  • When and where last seen
  • Whether it was wearing a collar and tag or chipped.

If the Council has possession of your dog they will tell you how you may get it back.
