Public consultation feedback
Local people give thumbs up to Calne Town Centre redevelopment
People in Calne have responded extremely positively to proposals to redevelop the town centre and create a new heart of Calne.
Consultation with local people has shown that 86% of respondents are in favour of the proposals and Primark, Peacocks and Wilkinsons are amongst shops that people would like to see as part of the development.
The proposed redevelopment of Phelps Parade and adjacent land would revitalise the town centre with a new Woolworth store, further shops, new homes and a Public Square.
The opportunity to comment on the proposals took place during a public exhibition at the offices of Calne Town Council in November when between 800 and 1000 people visited to view the plans and hear more about the proposals.
A public meeting at Calne Town Hall was chaired by Cllr Charles Boase, he says, "The response to the plans has been enormously encouraging and shows the level of support the council has to revitalise this important area of Calne. Local people are enthusiastic about the scheme and are keen to ensure that the development meets their needs and expectations for the future".
Leader of North Wiltshire District Council, Cllr Dick Tonge, says, "This is an exciting project for Calne and we are delighted that local people have embraced this important scheme to further improve the centre of Calne. The consultation has provided us with important feedback, all the comments have been evaluated and we have now submitted the planning application".
