Food Complaints

Complaint about a Food Product

The Environmental Health Food Team will investigate complaints about foods, purchased and/or manufactured on the District, which are contaminated by foreign bodies, are out of condition e.g., mouldy, have been sold or used past their ‘use by’ date or are suspected of giving rise to ill-health. In some cases it may be appropriate to pass the complaint on to other bodies for investigation, such as quality issues dealt with by Trading Standards at Wiltshire County Council.  Please click on the link below to view the Trading Standards website:

We will try to establish the source of the food, identify the cause of the complaint and thereby prevent recurrence of a similar nature. Where there has been a serious breach of food safety it may be appropriate to pursue the matter in a formal manner which may include prosecution of the offender. The complainant will need to provide details of the circumstances leading to the complaint being made in the form of a witness statement, which may be used as evidence.

The issue of compensation to the complainant is not dealt with by this Department, therefore you may feel it more appropriate to approach the retailer/producer directly with your complaint.

What to Do

  • Upon discovering the offending food item, ensure that no further deterioration occurs by storing under refrigeration, if appropriate.
  • Place in a clean plastic bag.
  • Retain all packaging materials that may contain important information.
  • Retain receipt as proof of purchase.
  • Make a note of timetable of events i.e. date/time purchased, how stored, how/when discovered, who consumed etc.
  • Contact Environmental Health by telephone on (01249) 706555, or bring offending item into the Monkton Park office during office hours as soon as possible so that the complaint can be investigated without undue delay
