Urban design work in Area 1 Malmesbury
(updated October 2008)
Undergrounding wires around the Horsefair area of Malmesbury
In 2008 Scottish & Southern Energy (S&SE) carried out undergrounding of a substantial part of the renewed supply. North Wiltshire District Council and Malmesbury Town Council contributed £10,000 to the overall cost and S&SE funded the remainder.
The work is in a particularly historic part of the centre of Malmesbury. The streets affected were Horsefair, Foundry Road, St Mary's Street, Shipton Hill, Burnham Road and Gloucester Road.
Malmesbury Town Hall paving
The footway in front of the Town Hall was widened and paved with stone in 2003. A crossing point at the junction with Cross Hayes Lane was also provided as was level access to both main entrances to the Town Hall.
Malmesbury HLF Enhancements & Artworks
Greatly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, enhancement works were carried out to Abbey Steps by re-paving them with stone (and the 10 landings incorporate bronze plaques depicting important events in Malmesbury's history), extending the western footway at the south of Cross Hayes including improved street lighting, and reconstructing Back Hill Steps with shallower stone risers, stone paving and replacement street furniture during 2000 and 2001.
The Triangle's pedestrian area
Partly funded through Malmesbury's Heritage and Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS). The Triangle benefitted in 2004 from new York stone paving running from St Mary's Street to Bristol Street; a widened footpath with dropped kerbs laid at the junction with Katifer Lane and cast iron litter bins installed near the junctions with St Mary's Street and Bristol Street. The footpath was also extended in front of The Three Cups pub where there was no pavement before.
Improved Streetlighting
Funded by North Wiltshire District Council, with partnership support from Malmesbury Town and Wiltshire County Council, improved and traditional streetlighting was completed at Cross Hayes, Abbey Steps, Mill Lane and Horsefair during 2006 and 2007.
