Drinking Water
What Services does the Department provide?
There are approximately 45 private water sources currently registered in North Wiltshire. Some properties will have a supply of their own; others may be linked to a supply from a nearby property. These premises may be commercial, domestic or mixed. For example, a dairy farm may be supplied by water from a nearby spring or borehole. This water may be used for commercial reasons, as well as used in the farmhouse and/or adjoining holiday cottage.
Registration
All private water supplies must be registered with the local authority. This is free of charge. If you require an application form, please contact the Environmental Health Team on (01249) 706555.
Sampling
The Council has a statutory duty to sample private water supplies on a regular basis, in order to ensure that the water meets the required standard and to protect public health. The water can be tested for both bacteriological and chemical contamination.
The supplies are categorised, according to their use, e.g. domestic or commercial etc and the number of people or volume of water used. The sources will be tested on a regular programme.
Will I receive feedback on the test results?
Yes. A copy of the results from the laboratory will be sent to you, together with details of any further action required to remedy the situation, if applicable.
Will you advise me on appropriate types of water treatment?
Yes. If the water requires treatment in order to meet the required legal standard, the relevant Officer will be able to provide information on a suitable type of water treatment, e.g. ultra-violet of filter, as well as provide advice on where to get further help if necessary.
Do you charge me for a routine water sample?
Yes. A charge is made to help cover our costs. For full details, please contact the Department on the above number.
Can I request a water sample at any time?
Yes. If you are worried about the quality of your drinking water, you can contact the Department at any time for further advice or information. If you require a further sample, a test will be carried out at your request. Please note that a charge may again be made for this service.
Mains Water Supplies
If you are on a mains water supply, the Council will not routinely sample to test the quality of your water. In North Wiltshire the mains water is provided by either Bristol Water, Thames Water or Wessex Water depending on which part of the District you live in.
If you are concerned about the quality of your mains drinking water, you should contact your water authority directly.
If the problem persists, you may be able to request a mains water sample from the Environmental Health Department. You will be given feedback on the result of the test, as well as any appropriate guidance and help. If necessary, the responsible Officer will liase with the water authority to determine the problem and rectify the situation. Full feedback will be provided on the progress and outcome of the investigation.
Please note that a charge may be made to cover the cost of the water sample. Full details are available from the Department on telephone number (01249) 706555.
