Bulky Refuse Collections Guidance Notes

When considering organising a special collection for bulky items, please be aware that there are some items that cannot be collected and that the general guidance notes should be followed.

When listing items for collection, please bear in mind that one item is something that two men can carry.  One part from a three-piece suite, a dining table, two dining chairs, a divan base and a mattress are all examples of one item.

Items which cannot be included in this service are:
  • Garden Waste
  • Gas Bottles
  • Outbuildings, including sheds and greenhouses
  • General builders waste
  • Soil or rubble
  • Concrete posts
  • Window frames/doors - internal and external
  • Fencing, gates and wire
  • Vehicles or vehicle parts
  • Xmas trees
  • Asbestos
  • Fluid containers, e.g. drums
  • Pianos and other similar heavy musical items
  • Fixtures and fittings, e.g. kitchen units, bathroom suites
For details of how to dispose of some items on this list, look at the Household Recycling Centre section.

General guidance notes:
  • If a carpet cannot be moved by people, cut it into pieces, roll it and tie it.
  • Underlay is an additional item.
  • A suite of furniture is not classed as one item.
  • Items should not be filled with other rubbish.
  • Items must be easily accessible from one point at the property.
  • Identical items have to be listed separately.  If only one item is listed and identical ones are put out for collection then none of the items in concern will be taken.
  • Only the items on the list will be collected, additional requests must be made for additional items.
