Green Waste Legislation - April 2007

The compost produced in North Wiltshire is take for commercial composting - as such the end product has to meet certain standards. It is accredited by the Soil Association and the Composting Association as it meets the quality mark BSI PAS100 2005.

Whilst much of the waste generated in the kitchen is compostable, it is no longer suitable for commercial composting. This is due to the Animal Bi-Products Regulations which were introduced as a result of the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001, with the intention of preventing the spread of e-coli and salmonella.

The safest way to ensure that commercial compost, produced from household green waste meets these regulations is to ban all kitchen waste and cardboard from the green waste bin. This has taken effect from 1 Apr 2007.
