SportsAid

SportsAid, the 'charity for sport' “focuses on providing funding at grass-roots level, to encourage young and disabled talent in sport nationwide”.

Grants are awarded to able-bodied and disabled young people who have to overcome financial and/or physical disadvantages in order to fulfil their potential. The money helps to offset the high costs of training and equipment, to enable young people to make the most of their sporting ability.

Two types of grants are awarded:
  • National grants of £500 (per year)
  • Regional grants of £250 (per year)
The two main criteria for a SportsAid grant are talent and need. A SportsAid grant should make a real difference to a young person pursuing their sporting career.

To be eligible for a grant, participants must be:
  • Aged between 12 and 18 years (special cases may be made for under 12s and 19-, 20- and 21-year-olds)
  • Disabled competitors up to the age of 25, or competitors over 25 who are new (not more than three years) to sport, and showing strong potential
  • In genuine financial need - and therefore not in receipt of a National Lottery World Class Performance grant
  • Members of a national, or national development squad

Awards for All

Awards for All is a lottery grants programme that gives grants of between £500 and £10,000 to small, local groups in a quick and straightforward way.

The programme is able to support a wide variety of groups, covering activities as diverse as arts, sport, heritage, education, health and the environment. This is because Awards for All is supported by all five ‘good cause’ lottery distributors, the Arts Council of England, Community Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Sport England, and the New Opportunities Fund.

Awards for All is underpinned by four aims, which form the main success criteria. Projects are supported which:
  • Support community activity
  • Extend access and participation
  • Increase skill and activity
  • Improve the quality of life
Most sports clubs can and do fulfil these criteria, particularly if they are pro-active in their club development.

The types of project that Awards for All support include:
  • Events
  • Training courses
  • Start-up costs
  • Promotional material
  • Equipment
  • Transport costs
  • Volunteers’ expenses
If you feel your club could benefit from an Awards for All grant for any of the type of projects listed above, and your club is a not-for-profit group with a constitution and a bank/building society account, please telephone the Sports Development Team 01249 706452 to discuss possible applications.

Alternatively, for further information, see the Awards for All website: www.awardsforall.org.uk.

Sport England

Sport England is the brand name of the English Sports Council, which is the distributor of lottery funds to sport. This is divided into two core funds:
  • A Community Projects Fund for local projects that everyone can access
  • A World Class Fund targeted at producing the medal winners of tomorrow
The World Class Fund is available only to recognised national governing bodies of sport and certain identified capital projects. However, the Community Projects Fund contains three elements which will support sport at a local level:
  • Small Projects Awards (up to £5,000) support organisations such as schools and voluntary groups for capital and short-term revenue schemes. Priority is given to areas of deprivation and disadvantaged groups.
  • Capital Awards (over £5,000) support community provision for all, and are aimed at increasing participation in sport. Priority will be given to areas of deprivation.
  • Revenue Awards (over £5,000) help further to tackle social exclusion in sport.

Sport Relief Funding Opportunities for 11 - 21 olds

The aim of the Sport Relief Awards programme is to provide opportunities for young people aged 11-21 to promote community cohesion and conflict resolution. Sport Relief Awards will be youth led and enable young people to contribute to building cohesive communities through sporting and recreational activities.

The underlying principles of the programme are:
  • A common vision and sense of belonging for all young people
  • Diversity of young people’s backgrounds and circumstances are appreciated and positively valued
  • Those from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities
  • Strong and positive relationships are developed between young people from different backgrounds
The Sport Relief Awards programme will use the enabling power of sports and recreational activities to promote these principles and enable young people to develop their potential by leading their own projects and being part of the solution. In particular the programme will:
  • Encourage young people to become leaders within their communities and be forces for positive change
  • Involve a diverse range of young people as award winners enabling them to develop their own skills and abilities.
  • Encourage young people to develop a range of innovative ideas and help identify the types of interventions that work.
  • Prioritise awards that show the potential for long term change and provide additional resources to support these young people.
Sport Relief Awards will be an open programme across the UK and will provide awards in the range of £250-£5,000 to enable promising young people with innovative ideas to set up projects of community benefit.

As well as a cash award, young people will also receive a tailored package of support from a dedicated Development Manager who will be on hand to provide support, guidance and mentoring in order to develop and delivery community based initiatives.
