Disabled Facilities Grants
If you or someone in your home is disabled you may qualify for help towards the cost of providing adaptations and facilities so that the disabled person can continue to live at home.
What is a Disabled Facilities Grant?
Disabled Facilities Grants are given for essential adaptations so that a disabled person has the full use and freedom of movement around their home.
These are mandatory grants provided by North Wiltshire District Council on behalf of the Government.
Who can apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant?
You can apply for a grant if you are:
- a tenant or owner of a property
- a landlord on behalf of a disabled tenant
The person who applies for the grant does not have to be the disabled person who needs the adaptation.
How is a Disabled Facilities Grant calculated?
The maximum grant that can be paid is £25,000 per application in England.
The amount of grant is decided by a means test which looks at the income and capital of the disabled person and their spouse or partner. Where the disabled person is a child, no means test will normally apply.
How do I apply?
You should contact the Community Care Information Point on 0845 6031570 and ask for an assessment by an occupational therapist.
As well as assessing your needs, an occupational therapist can offer advice and present various options and ideas to help with daily tasks you may be finding difficult.
If the solutions involve adapting your home and you need help to finance the works then the occupational therapist will make a referral to North Wiltshire District Council for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
