North Wiltshire District Council has a combination of standard and discretionary agreements on conditions of service. The Council also offers improved benefits, some of which are listed below.

Working Hours & Flexitim
e

Your normal working week is one of 37 hours from Monday to Friday. Normal office hours are 8.45am to 5.15pm, Monday to Thursday, and 8.45am to 4.45pm on Fridays, with a lunch break each working day of one hour.   Alternatively, some posts may allow you to work your weekly hours in accordance with the Council's scheme of flexible working hours which allows officers some discretion in arranging working time.  However, please note in some posts working hours may fixed to enable delivery of service.

Job Sharing and Part Time posts

For most of our posts we welcome applications to job share. This is normally 18.5 hours each per week.
We also encourage part time employees, hours can sometimes be varied to suit individual needs.

Learning and Development

North Wiltshire District Council encourages all its employees to take advantage of learning and development opportunities. A wide range of courses are run in-house, there may also be an opportunity to gain further qualifications in your area of work through day release arrangements.

Leave

The annual leave entitlement ranges from 22-28 days depending on your grade and length of service in local government. This is in addition to the statutory public holidays (usually 8 days per annum).

The holiday year usually runs from 1st April to 31st March and you are expected to take your full leave entitlement within the appropriate holiday year.  However, for some teams the holiday year runs from
1st January to 31st December.  Your annual leave entitlement in the year of commencing or leaving employment is based, pro rata to the full holiday year.

Salary

Salary is paid calendar monthly, in twelve equal payments, on or about the 23rd of each month, by credit transfer.  In some circumstances salary will be paid on a weekly basis, it is the policy of the Council to move all payments to a monthly basis at some time in the future.

Pension Scheme

Local Government Superannuation Scheme (the Wiltshire Pension Fund) is automatic on appointment for all employees unless the employee chooses to elect otherwise, the contribution rate being 6% of gross salary.  Detailed information about the contributions and benefits is provided to all new employees.

Private Medical Insurance

If you have over 10 years’ continuous service with NWDC or your post is graded 8 or above you will have the option of joining the Council's Private Medical Insurance Scheme. This benefit is subject to tax liability. Additional cover can be purchased for your spouse and/or family.

Sickness pay entitlement

If you are absent from work through illness or accident you are entitled, subject to the provision of the Scheme, to continued salary payments (less National Insurance Sickness or Disablement Benefit) as follows:

Eye Tests

Employees who regularly use a VDU in the course of their work, or who normally work on a VDU screen for a continuous spell of an hour or more are entitled to request and receive regular eye tests. If as a result it is found that you need glasses specifically for VDU use, then the Council will reimburse you up to £50.00 towards the cost of glasses, lenses or contact lenses plus £8.00 towards the cost of the eye test.

Employee Assistance Programme

A confidential telephone counselling service and legal helpline is available for employees. The scheme offers employees and immediate family members who are living at the same address, help and support with personal, family, financial or work-related problems. The freephone number is available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Car Purchase Scheme

Employees who are authorised to use their car for work and meet the conditions of the scheme can take advantage of special Council loans.

Car Leasing

This scheme requires the car user to pay regular contributions towards the cost of the car hire in return for a vehicle and its maintenance. Employees who are elegible will receive contribution towards the cost of the lease according to the conditions of the scheme.

Car Allowance

The post may carry either a casual user car allowance or a lease car. The rates of payment of claims are based on the engine c.c. rating of the vehicle and are in accordance with the national conditions of service agreements. The option of a lease vehicle will be subject to the conditions of the Council's car leasing scheme.

The post may carry an essential car user allowance or a lease car, (the need for which can be reviewed at any time). The rates of payment of claims are based on the engine c.c. rating of the vehicle and are in accordance with the national conditions of service agreements. The option of a lease vehicle will be subject to the conditions of the Council's car leasing scheme.

Relocation Expenses

Searching for accommodation and moving house can be very expensive. North Wiltshire District Council may be able to assist employees with allowances to cover the cost of lodging, legal fees and removal expenses, subject to meeting the conditions of the scheme.

Leisure Facilities

Council employees are entitled to use the North Wilts leisure centres and can claim concessionary rates with a Staff Leisure Passport.
Sports and Social Club

North Wiltshire District Council Sports and Social Club encourages employees, their families and friends to participate in a varied programme of events each year. The aim is to promote good working relationships across and between business areas, to encourage new friendships, whilst having fun!  The events are approved by a Sports and Social Club Committee, employee volunteers who determine the allocation of monies made available by the Council. Events vary each year, according to employee suggestions, these have included Quiz nights, Paintballing, Ten Pin Bowling, Microlighting, a Corporate day out, Theme Park trips, Race days, London Shopping, Xmas party, Theatre Trips etc.

Lottery Club

The 600 Club Lottery is available to all employees and costs £1.00 per month. If you wish to join, the money will be deducted from your wages/salary on receipt of your completed application. The draw takes place at 4pm on the 3rd Thursday of every month in the Chairman's room - spectators are welcome to attend.

Professional Subscriptions

North Wiltshire District Council will pay for one relevant professional subscription per employee.

No Smoking

North Wiltshire District Council operates a No Smoking Policy throughout all its working areas.

Health & Safety
The Council takes the health, safety and welfare of its employees, very seriously and has a number of policies and procedures in place to assist in removing, minimising and controlling risks that may impact on employees.  Copies of the Council’s policies and procedures relating to health, safety and welfare can be obtained from Human Resources & Payroll.

Probation

For a new entrant to Local Government the appointment is subject to a satisfactory period of employment of six months.

Other Conditions
Employment subject to satisfactory references and to medical clearance from the Council Medical Advisor.
Proof of evidence of qualifications is required before the appointment is confirmed.
