Nature Conservation
The Council supports a number of initiatives that promote the biodiversity of the District.
Wiltshire Biodiversity Action Plan
Following the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 1992, the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) was created on behalf of the UK Biodiversity Partnership and the UK Government.
The plan:
- describes the UK's biological resources
- commits a detailed plan for the protection of these resources
- has 391 Species Action Plans, 45 Habitat Action Plans and 162 Local Biodiversity Action Plans with targeted actions
The Wiltshire Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) is the local manifestation of the above.

Local Nature Reserves
There are four Local Nature Reserves (LNR’s)in North Wiltshire –
- Corston Pond - Malmesbury(Grid reference SU923843)
- Conygre Mead - Malmesbury (Grid reference SU934876)
- Mortimores Wood -Chippenham (Grid reference ST919717)
- Jubilee Lake - Wootton Bassett (Grid reference SU072837)
