Countryside Management

Countryside Management

The Council is involved in a number of countryside projects, either directly managing them or working in partnership with other organisations.  All relate to the specific targets laid out in the Open Space Strategy.

A few examples of projects are:

Cricklade Country Way

The Cricklade Country Way project aims to develop a multi transport route from Swindon to Cricklade linking to the CotswoldWaterPark and communities in that area. The project will restore two historic canals and a railway, provide footpaths, bridlepaths and cycleways.

The Wilts and Berks Canal

Britain's canals and waterways are enjoying an extraordinary revival. After decades of decline and neglect, they are currently being restored at a faster rate than when they were first constructed 200 years ago.

Areas Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB’s)

AONB’s are areas of the countryside which have special qualities in terms of the landscape and therefore warrant a statutory designation.

The Cotswolds AONB and the North Wessex Downs AONB both fall partly within North Wiltshire. The Council is working with both the Cotswolds AONB Board and the North Wessex Downs AONB Partnership to further enhance the landscape value of these areas.
