Project Work

Chippenham Gifted and Talented Project - May 2008

A programme of coaching is being delivered at St Peter’s Primary School for young people across Chippenham urban primary schools identified as Gifted and Talented by their PE co-ordinator’s. The coaching project has enabled 20 pupils, aged between 6 and 7, the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities which will test their balance, co-ordination, agility, reflexes and hand-eye co-ordination.

The idea behind the project is to bring together the top young pupils in the area and develop their skills through the provision of skills and drills that they may not receive through their curriculum lessons in schools. Alex Muse, North Wiltshire District Council’s sports development officer added, ‘these young people will be given details of local sports clubs that they may not have considered before, to encourage them to give those sports a go as they may discover that they have talent for these sports as well.’
This provides local sports clubs an opportunity to work with the most athletically gifted young people in the area as well as opening up new opportunities to those young people. This scheme will also be run in the Wootton Bassett area in September.

Older People’s Activity Sessions – Malmesbury  - May 2008

An activity session for older people has been set up at the Activity Zone in Malmesbury providing over 50’s with the opportunity to take part in a variety of sports and activities. The session, which has been running on a Wednesday afternoon from 1.30 - 3.30pm, has been well attended with participants playing badminton, short tennis and squash, as well as using the gym and going swimming.
North Wiltshire district council’s sports development officer, Alex Muse, developed the project in partnership with Andy Donald, the centre manager at TAZ, after seeing a lack of opportunities for older people to take part in activity sessions with other people of a similar age. Muse said, ‘the idea of the activity sessions is to encourage people to come along and take part, have a bit of fun during the sessions and go away healthy and happy!’. A coaching co-ordinator is present throughout the session providing coaching support and helping to organize a variety of activities according to demand.

The project runs up to the end of June and it is hoped that there will be enough interest to enable the session to continue through the summer holidays.

Development of Rugby Club School Links  - February - June 2008

Primary Schools across North Wiltshire are benefitting from specialist tag rugby coaching from Wiltshire’s rugby community coach, Alan Lowe, through a targeted project being run by North Wiltshire District Council’s sports development officer, Alex Muse. In addition to the provision of coaching, 18 selected schools will benefit from a free kit pack worth £100 provided by Wiltshire Rugby that will help the school to continue the delivery of rugby after the coach has left.

The project aims to encourage mutually beneficial relationships between primary schools and local rugby clubs so that pupils have the opportunity to experience high quality tag rugby coaching in curriculum time and the clubs benefit from having increased communication and contact with the PE Co-ordinators within those schools. This will hopefully lead to a greater level of awareness within the schools regarding junior activities at the rugby clubs and more young players being involved in the clubs.

Alex Muse, SDO for North Wiltshire is keen to see these links developing between clubs and schools and said, ‘generating these pathways for young people should provide them with more opportunities to participate in sport and will provide clubs with a continual input of young players at that end of their junior sections. Having Alan working with teachers in the schools will also give them more confidence to deliver rugby once the project has finished.

The project will also see tag rugby being delivered into those smaller schools in the district that have limited equipment and teachers with the knowledge and confidence to deliver rugby. This will help to encourage a greater number of primary schools to provide tag rugby which provides a high tempo game to primary school children that everyone can enjoy.
