Sherston Boules and Carnival
15th July 2006
The 19th annual Boules Day will take place on the 16th July - tradition demands it’s always on the Saturday closest to Bastille Day. Once again, teams from all over the country - and from across the Channel – will compete for the Sherston Cup and the Sherston Plate. Expect plenty of nail-biting tension, fine standards of play and lots of fun. There’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy at Sherston Boules Day.
If the French game has caught on in a big way in the county, it’s due in no small part to this popular tournament. There were only sixteen local teams in 1986 in the first competition; today there are 128 teams. If there were extra pitches, even more would clamour to participate. But that would reduce the number of other attractions on the High Street and the organisers are determined to keep a balance. That’s why the event attracts so many spectators of all ages.
Stop for home-prepared smoked salmon baguettes, salads and coffee at the popular Café Francais; enjoy a pint or a glass of wine at the bars, listen to live jazz; browse round the food, craft and plant stalls; have a go on the giant tombola; and take the kids as there will be plenty for them to do! This is the best and the biggest single day boules event in the UK and it’s worth getting up early for! Matches start from 9.30am.
All the profits from the week are to be ploughed back as usual into local good causes – in 2003 more than £12,000 was distributed to schools, clubs and organisations.
